Ten days after DG&IGP R K Dutta issued a standard operating procedure to the police department in case of violence against medical professionals and medical establishments, a doctor in Victoria Hospital was beaten up by the attender of a patient Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute (BMCRI) Teachers’ Association staged a protest in the hospital on Friday condemning the attack. The DGP’s circular instructed respective beat officers to form a WhatsApp group with medical superintendents of hospitals to alert in case of violence against doctors. That hasn’t happened yet.
The accused Suhas, was arrested by the Central police station police on Friday, produced in magistrate court where he was given a bail. His father, Satish (56), was supposed to get EEG at PMSSY hospital in Victoria Hospital on May 26 but Suhas brought him on May 28. Since the hospital was staffed just enough to provide emergency services, Suhas was asked to wait but he allegedly assaulted Dr Ramesh Patil, a Neurology II year DM postgraduate student on call that day. Patil suffered injuries near his eye.
Dr Ravi N, Secretary, BMCRI Teachers’ Association, said,“We have no police station in this 60-acre campus. There is no patrolling and we have female doctors moving from one hospital to another just to cater to patients but we are still assaulted.”
